Maria Karkanaki (b. 1976) is a Greek photographer, born and based in Crete. She studied Graphic Design in Bournemouth University of England. Her involvement in photography started in 2014. She attended photography seminars at Hellenic Photographic Society of Crete. She took part in numerous workshops with important photographers in order to develop and deepen her own photographic interpretation. Her work deals with contemporary social issues through a subjective approach, in order to unlock hidden realities and explore lost identities.

She is interested in typologies and obsessions of human behaviour and how people experience life and interact within the constraints of time and space.

She is currently working on two long-term projects: ‘Eleni’, concerning the documentation of οlder women’s life and surroundings in order to emerge the beauty of what isn’t apparently beautiful and ‘Utopian Luster’, which intends to document the uneasy, ‘suffocating’ relationship between humans and nature.

Her photography has been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Crete.
